"The Heart of the Home: Fireplace Designs, How to Build Them," issued by the Common Brick Manufacturers' Association of America, 1927. The 24-page booklet has a brown paper cover with the title across the top and the association's name on the bottom. At the center is a photograph of a two-story room with a brick fireplace, mantel decorations, and two chairs. At the beginning is an introduction on the importance of correct fireplace construction. Also included are sections on fireplace and chimney construction; essential requirements; size of fireplace; location of fireplace; proper proportions of the fireplace opening; flue areas; proper shape of the combustion chamber; location of the smoke shelf; metal throats and dampers; methods of construction; and fireplace equipment. Many black and white photographs, instructional drawings, and dimension tables are also included. At the back is a list of other construction related books. With abrasions; creases; surface soiling; and small tears along the cover edges, the artifact is in fair condition.
